About Millevaches Regional Nature Park

Millevaches Regional Nature Park, established in 1999, covers a broad expanse of upland terrain in the Limousin and part of the Massif Central across the Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie regions of France. The park features an elevated plateau with altitudes often exceeding 900 meters (around 3000 feet), characterized by peat bogs, heathlands, spruce and beech forests, and a rich network of rivers and streams that form the headwaters of several major French rivers including the Vienne, Dordogne, and Creuse. Its name refers to 'a thousand sources' rather than 'a thousand cows,' highlighting the area's hydrological importance. The park supports diverse ecosystems with important bird populations such as black grouse, capercaillie, and numerous raptors, and is home to mammals like roe deer, wild boar, and beavers. Visitors are drawn to the abundant hiking and mountain biking trails that traverse the forested valleys, open moors, and traditional villages. Notable landmarks include the Plateau de Millevaches itself, the peat bog reserve at the Tourbières, and the old stone villages of the Monts d'Ambazac. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy fishing in clear rivers stocked with trout and exploring historic mills and ancient churches. The park’s blend of natural and cultural heritage makes it a tranquil destination that emphasizes sustainable tourism and environmental education. Its remoteness and varied terrain provide solitude for nature lovers seeking an authentic connection with the French countryside.
